After the end of the Cold War, Italy regained the status of an independent actor in matters of its foreign policy. Historically, Italy is one of the leading countries in the Mediterranean, and it pretends to the role of the regional power, what implies maintaining stability and international security, and taking the greatest responsibility for dealing with the most urgent problems on the territory. This paper investigates the main goals and objectives of Italian policy in the area and challenges, at bridging of which it focuses. Moreover, the work argues that Italy’s main priorities in the Mediterranean coincide with the interests of the European Union and the problems to be solved by the Italian policy in the region can only be resolved in cooperation with the EU.
