Factors Determining the Financial Success of a Foreign Motion Picture: Company Strategies and Consumer Preferences

This research assesses the factors of success of western movies, using as an example the world's flagship film industry - USA. Focusing on the hundred most profitable films of 2014-2015, key factors influencing the box office and profitability of films were identified. Importance of factors such as: budget of a film; film franchise; film genre; critics’ reviews and age restrictions is recognised. Also, an assessment is made of factors influencing the preferences of the Russian audience, based on a survey of 175 representatives of Russian youth. On the basis of this assessment, an aggregate analysis of the success of a film is made and recommendations to improve the effectiveness of management strategies in the field of Russian cinema for different target groups and film companies strategies are provided.
