Practices of Commentating on Television: Mechanisms and Functions

The purpose of this work is to answer the question, why do practices of commentating exist on contemporary “high definition” television. Practice of commentating is an oral narrative that goes together with television broadcast and means the same as commentated image does. It is assumed that television commentary is a phenomenon that confirms the authenticity of reality shown by television. Contemporary picture of televised events is not able to be reliable on its own because current level if visual literacy is high. The main object of the study is sportscast, which is considered to be the most representative case of the use of the practices that have been called commentating ones.
