Determinants of Alcohol Consumption in Russia

From year to year alcohol abuse in Russia leads to the irreparable losses. In order to solve the problem of excessive alcohol consumption, it is necessary to identify the determinants for choosing alcoholic drinks. The results obtained can be useful for creating the range of actions aiming at decreasing and extirpation alcohol addiction. The study was carried out on the basis of the database RLMS HSE for 2011 - 2014, individuals older than 14 years. OLS, Tobit, Probit, the Arellano-Bond models were used to develop the working model under this research project. It allowed identifying the determinants of alcohol consumption probability, frequency and variety alcoholic drinks consumption. The study shows that converse U-shaped relationship has been found between alcohol consumption and age. Men drink more vodka and beer, while women prefer wine. Accommodation in the city, living together, having children increase alcohol consumption. Individuals served Army drink more beer and vodka, consuming less wine. Consumption In previous period influences present consumption. The main conclusion of the study is that wine, vodka, beer consumption structures are different.
