The problem of emerging of the school of History Studies at the University of Oxford in the 19th century was underestimated by the scholars compared to the foundation of the German and the French ones. Consequently, the figure of Regius Professor in Modern History, William Stubbs, who actually made significant contribution to this process, was also disregarded. There is no any special research in historiography dedicated to his work, which had been done to open the first School of History in England. The present paper describes a proposed study, which will seek to investigate the process of formation of the historical education in Oxford and to define distinctive features of the English approach in establishing the History discipline. The study will be guided by the following questions: What role did Professor Stubbs play in the foundation of the first school of History Studies in England? What measures did he undertake to organize the new academic discipline and to create new faculty? What factors helped him to reach the positon of Regius Professor in Modern History and influenced his decisions in the University? In the proposed research I will make an effort to find it out analyzing the biography of the founder of the school of History Studies in Oxford – bishop William Stubbs. He was recognized as one of the first professional English historians and the sole initiator of the History education in the University. The review of the results of professor’s work there will help to define, whereas there were any unique features of creating history discipline in England.
