Marriage Strategies in Moscow during the Petrine Time

Marriage in Russia, especially in Ancient and Early Modern Russia was regarded as the main event in life. Each family wanted the best match for their children or siblings accordingly to their social status. Therefore, there were marriage strategies, which were specific for each social group. The present paper intends approach marriage strategies among nobility, merchants and raznochintsy, their social and material status influencing them to marriage to retain person in the first quarter of the 18th century. The investigation will focus on the analysis of the more than 500 wedding documents - sgovornyie zapisi. The analysis of this type of source reveals opportunities and complications of choosing a partner in Early Modern Russia, particularly in Moscow.
