Actuality of this work is conditioned by the increase of attention of modern American society to the history of the USA. It happens due to active development of the Internet and increasing of accessible materials. Wars in the Near East and a new coil of the opposition with the Russia are another reasons. In addition, 2014 and 2015 marked the round anniversaries of full entry of the USA in war in Vietnam and the ending of the war - 40 and 50 accordingly.

The purpose of research - a description of the principles of the audiovisual representation of the Vietnam War in American popular cinema.

Research objectives :

1) Definition the place of the following concepts in the modern historical science: memory, historical experience and the collective trauma.

2) Description of the methods for the analysis of art film works studied in this paper

3) Identification of key trends in the audiovisual representation of the history in films and on TV

4) Analysis of the most popular American-made film works, which reflect the Vietnam War

This work allowed us to determine the basic principle of representation of the Vietnam War in the US film industry . It is connected with the fact that the American nation was not ready for such a painful military and ideological defeat.

Cinematography managed to reflect the nature of American collective trauma and did this in deeper way than other types of art.
