The subject of our research are the trends in the development of methods for studying Russian readers of newspapers and magazines in the end XIX – and the middle of XX century. The object of research is the methods of studying of readers.

The scientific novelty of the study is an attempt to examine the trends in the development of methods for studying the Russian newspaper readers and the end of the XIX century magazines until mid XX century and built around a periodization of development.

The purpose of the study is to identify trends in the development of methods for the study of Russian readers of newspapers and magazines in the end XIX – to the mid XX century, in the context of socio-cultural and political changes in the country. We were applied following tasks:

1. reviewed the background appearance of the first methods

2. traced the development of statistical methods in the print edition in Russia

3. considered the formation of the questionnaire and the questionnaire method

4. considered the formation and development of psychological and sociological methods from the beginning to the middle of the XX century

5. Develop a periodization of the development of methods for the study of newspaper readers in Russia from the XVII to the middle of the XX century

To perform the tasks we used the methods of historical and genetic analysis, periodisation, structuring, analysis, statistics, and archival documents. Also, a comparative analysis of questionnaires for the Study of Readers program was held.

As a result of our study, we were able to identify the most commonly used methods in the period from the beginning of the XVII to the middle of the XX century and periodised them.

This work is also partially included in the special courses on the study of the audience and its elements will be included in the program for the analysis of media audiences.
