The object of study is the interaction between modernism and postmodernism in the cultural environment, and the subject - philosophical works of American researcher Frederic Jameson. The aim of the study is to compare the views of Frederick Jameson on modernism and postmodernism, to identify relevance of modernism for modern social and cultural situation and the potential of further ways of cultural development of society in the era of postmodernism.  In the end, the author concludes that it does not matter whether we believe that modern culture is a transitional period, after which, the modernism will return, or comes something completely new, or we believe that modernism is in the past and postmodern has not yet revealed itself in all its glory, to deny the relationship between postmodern and modern, postulated by Jameson, is pointless. Despite the obvious gap, modern has contained already the makings of a postmodern and led to it through the collapse of realism genre, loss of meaning, the destruction of history and perception of space. But we should not forget about the paradox that lies in the fact that, despite the apparent logic of the development of artistic elements from the past course, postmodern is still separated from modern, and it is impossible to take a step back. And the chasm was formed by the introduction of a new type of production, the domination of Information Technology. After all, it provides comprehensive coverage of popular culture, the emergence of new artistic media, such as video. Reverse is not possible, we can only move forward, given the fact of the maximum Integration of culture in social life, but without looking back at the past, this movement will not be possible.
