Japonisme and Art Nouveau Jewellery Since the 1990s, popularity of Japanese art and antiques has grown exponentially due to an escalating number of new contemporary art museums, galleries and certainly due to the international recognition and success of Asian artists. The sudden rise of demand and international popularity of Japanese art raises many questions for art historians, students and art critics. When and why, for instance, has it started? How does it influence on history of Western art? What art categories and genres have been influenced by Japanese Art? As the title implies this study is devoted to analysis of main Japanese motives that were used in Western art nouveau jewellery. The subject is the influence of Japanese art on the Western jewelry that was made in the period from 1885 through 1910. The author uses a data base that allows comparing appliance of Japanese motives by different masters and in different countries. Much attention is given to finding possible prototypes in Japanese art. For better understanding the author has provided information on Japanese foreign policy and economy in XIX-XX centuries. Moreover the author gives data about main collectors and collections of Japanese art in Europe, major jewellery houses and most famous jewellery masters of Europe and USA.
