The Influence of the Current Political Line on the School History Education in Russia
Politics and Governance
(Master’s programme)
2016
The dissertation is connected with Russian history’ memory and educational policy. Сurrent political line and political events influence on Russian school history and social science education. Researching this issue, we were going to characterize this process and political instruments of history politicization. The Russian Federation’s today authority is tend to use history education in a political way to legitimize its elite status, to justify some rights violations in Russia and current international policy. It is also a way to ground some undemocratic traditions. Special way of history education can help to form good image of Russian history and today authority. School students can be socialized and educated in a way to become loyal to the government citizens. There is a number of political instruments to impact on a history education (for example, special legislative acts, student’s and teacher’s books, state exams and history competitions). We found, that legislative acts and a number of educational standards are not too effective instruments, because state control in education system is not too strong and every teacher is able to fulfill some professional commitments in formal way, just printing a lot of reports and programs. State exams work in a different way, because every teacher has to train students to pass such exams in order to help them to become university students and to make good teacher’s reputation for themselves. Our survey and interviews showed that teachers identify themselves as quite free during class time. At the same time they understand their need to teach students for state exams (which includes some politicized questions) and duty to print a lot of documents and official reports. Moreover it is not a secret that current Russian authority is going to politicize history and social science. In that way we expect, that current political line will influence on history education transformation and such influence will become stronger.
