The paper analyzes the representation of love conflict in G. Flaubert's "Madame Bovary" and Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina". Based on recent research of the poetics of both novels, the author offers a comparative description of the methods by which the writers reach the effect of psychological "credibility" of emotions experienced by heroines. As the author of the work shows, such methods include omens, color symbolism, repetition and variation of the same phrases, episodes, etc. They all suggest a deep genetic link between two novels.
