Year of Graduation: 2016

The paper is a comparative analysis of the symbolism in Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" and Theodor Fontane's "Effi Briest". The author relies on the key works of recent years, dedicated primarily to the image of the "other" (peasant and Chinese respectively) in dreams and visions of the main characters - Anna and Effie. Using motif, intertextual and sociological methods of analysis, the author traces the profound structural similarities and not less significant differences in the ways of creating a symbolic subtext through which the authors convey the main psychological, ethical and social issues of the novels.
