The paper is dedicated to image rendering via Gradient-domain ray-tracing algorithms. We introduce the basic concepts and algorithms related to ray-tracing image rendering, touch upon the problem of global illumination and the ways to solve it. Besides, we describe the stochastic ray-tracing algorithms which gradient-domain algorithms are based on. The main purpose of this work is to develop a program that uses gradient-domain ray-tracing algorithms for image rendering. “Gradient-Domain Path Tracing” (2015) is chosen for implementation. This algorithm was introduced by Markus Kettunen and basically is an extension of original “Path Tracing”(1986). It allows to obtain higher quality images with less computational costs. The developed program allows to visualize the scene for preview and modification via OpenGL. For image rendering the program uses OpenMP to parallelize the algorithm on the CPU. The paper contains 44 pages, 3 chapters, 26 illustrations, 3 schemes, 16 bibliography items, 4 appendices. Keywords: image rendering, ray tracing, Path Tracing, Gradient-domain Path Tracing.

Student Theses at HSE must be completed in accordance with the University Rules and regulations specified by each educational programme.

Summaries of all theses must be published and made freely available on the HSE website.

The full text of a thesis can be published in open access on the HSE website only if the authoring student (copyright holder) agrees, or, if the thesis was written by a team of students, if all the co-authors (copyright holders) agree. After a thesis is published on the HSE website, it obtains the status of an online publication.

Student theses are objects of copyright and their use is subject to limitations in accordance with the Russian Federation’s law on intellectual property.

In the event that a thesis is quoted or otherwise used, reference to the author’s name and the source of quotation is required.
