Life expectancy in Japan and South Korea increased significantly in the XX century. However, despite the later rapid decrease in mortality of South Korea, today its life expectancy is similar in both countries. This study is aimed to analyze the unique ways of reducing mortality rates, as well as its causes. We estimated the contributions of specific ages and causes of death to the change in life expectancy by Andreev's decomposition method. Also, recent trends in life expectancy in Japan and South Korea were examined. The work showed that in South Korea there are opportunities for further growth by reducing not only the overall mortality but the mortality rate from cancer, traffic accidents, suicide and liver disease in males.
