Currently in the field of education research studies devoted to the effect of individual differences on success in educational and professional activities are very relevant. Perseverance, as one of the socially approved personal characteristics, is studied as a single trait recently. A. Duckworth developed the best-known method of measuring persistence – the scale of persistence instead. This scale consists of two subscales that were adapted to the Russian-speaking population recently and has good psychometric characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the persistence (measured by this tool) as a predictor of students’ academic achievements in secondary school and choice of future profession. The empirical base of the study represents a national panel, which consists of international tests’ participants, TIMSS 2011 students (Trends in Mathematics and Science Studies) and PISA 2012 (Program for International Student Assessment), filled the perseverance questionnaire. The results of regression analysis showed that perseverance of effort is a predictor of the high points of mathematics and Russian language unified state exam, and the consistency of interest allows prediction of the TIMSS results. The results of logistic regression analysis (for university plans) showed that students with higher level in perseverance of effort are more likely to choose higher education in future. At the same time, perseverance does not determine the choice in further higher education course. Such results may indicate the presence of specific cultural features in the field of education and professional development.
