Student: Pozharova Daria

Supervisor: Zoya Kotelnikova

Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Sociology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2016

The purpose of this work was to determine why only few PhD students complete the post-graduate study successfully and to understand whether there is a connection with the academic procrastination. For this reason, a current sociological research involving 18 post-graduate students from social studies and liberal arts was conducted in Moscow. The results showed that the main reason that have an influence on post-graduate students’ process of education is the situation of uncertainty, which does not allow them to write a thesis and as a consequence PhD students can complete the post-graduate study unsuccessfully. The analysis also demonstrated that there are many factors that affect this situation (institutional environment, scientific director and his style of communication with post-graduate students, peers’ and friends’ advices, multiparadigmality of social studies and liberal arts) and play a significant role in their future academic career. From these results it may be stated that situation of uncertainty exerts a significant influence on post-graduate students’ education.
