The current work is devoted to such a linguistic phenomenon, as an instrumental applicative. The main aim of this paper is to study the instrumental applicative in a typological perspective and to describe the alternative ways of expressing the instrumental meaning and various types of competition among them. It is important to notice that we put great emphasis on the competition among various ways of expressing the instrumental meaning, mainly, because we do not know much about this linguistic phenomenon, and this topic is often ignored in typological works. Besides, we also describe the main differences between the comitative and instrumental meanings and show that these differences are considered to be crucial in the choice of the ways of expressing the instrumental meaning.
