Dissimilation is a process when similar or equal segments become less similar. This phenomenon has a number of types and is found in various languages of the world; however, it is not fully explored and described. The present study is dedicated to investigate the distant dissimilation of the consonants, found in the Standard modern Russian in words as шефствовать, злорадствовать, where the first labiodental [в] in the suffix complex -ствов- can be omitted, and also in the word распространяться, where the first vibrant in the complex -простр- can be absent. Moreover, I also investigate the influence of word’s phonemic composition on its sound representation in the words with the root -шеф-, as the phoneme <ф> can cause absence of the labiodental consonant in -ств-. In the present study I use methods of experimental phonetic research; for validation of the results I carry out a statistical analysis of the factors that influence the realization of the investigated consonants in the presented phonetic contexts.
