Educational Programme: Design (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 10

Year of Graduation: 2016

The topic of my visual research is “Connection between architectural styles and typography”. Research is divided into two logical parts. The first part is devoted to the comparison stylistic features of typography with architectural styles from ancient times (the ancient Greek buildings and Greek capital font) until the end of XX and the beginning of XXI century (deconstructivism and deconstructed typography). This study is a kind of visual experiment. It was interesting to analyze and compare font samples, titles of old books, posters or advertisements with facades and elements of architectural monuments. In conclusion, I realized that the art of architecture and the art of typography are abstract and have limited expressive possibilities. However, they have the ability to feel subtle changes in the mood of society and transfer it with their own special expression. The second part is devoted to the study of Wiborg architecture. For the visual branding concept of Wiborg I developed a system of visual identification based on the created decorative typeface inspired by the Wiborg landmarks. Each character has several alternatives, stylistically related to the art movements in architecture. I made the separate visual research of Wiborg architecture and typography designs. This part of the study is the output of matching architecture and typography that I received and applied during the creation of the font.
