Foreign Language Acquisition by Russian Learners (Research Based on Analyzing German and English Learner Corpora)
2016
Foreign language acquisition is a topic of serious studies at the present moment; however, most of the studies focus on SLA and not much is known in the field of a third, etc. language acquisition. I put forward a task of investigating the influence of L1 and L2 on L3. The investigation is based on the analysis of mistakes in the German language produced by Russian-speaking students of NRU HSE. Having learnt the English language before, the students may fall back on it when using their third language (which is German). After analyzing and classifying the learners’ mistakes a comparison between annotations of German and English mistakes (the aspects and the causes of them) is to be made. This comparison enables us to get some data on language interaction and find out which language has the greater influence on the third language - the first language (Russian) or the second one that has been learned before (English). I believe transfer from the second language occurs in language aspects that do not exist in the learner’s native language: mistakes in choosing definite or indefinite article may be influenced by the English language, while mistakes in gender are supposed to be affected by the gender system of Russian.
