Final Grade: 9

Year of Graduation: 2016

The object of this study is possessive constructions in Russian. Exploring semantics of possessee, we have found that some nouns tend to behave like relational nouns: they have an obligatory valency and attach a dependent that denotes their possessor. We believe that certain semantic classes of nouns tend to participate in possessive relationships and prefer a particular type of possessive constructions. Using the corpus method and instruments of statistical analysis, we examine the degree of attraction of different nouns to possessive constructions. The results allow us to draw conclusions about what nouns define the semantics of different types of possessive constructions and create a classification that reflects the distribution of semantic classes for such constructions.
