In this paper, we study the relationship between the scientific activities of teachers and the educational results of their students. The relevance of the work is explained by the absence of the research on this issue in Russia. The studies conducted abroad show contradicting results. Moreover, the fact that the institutional structure of science in Russia is designed in such a way that scientific research institutes are distinguished as separate organizations and are separate from universities also adds to the importance of this question. By using the quasi-experimental design with the propensity score matching method in this work, I prove the existence of a cause-and-effect link between the involvement of teachers in research activities and the educational results of their students. It is shown that the educational results of the students whose teachers are involved in the research activity are higher by 0.39 of standard deviations in mathematics and 0.32 of standard deviations in critical thinking than the results of the students whose teachers are not involved in the research activity. Additionally, there has been conducted a study of differences in the training provided by teachers involved and not involved in research activities. In general, the training provided by teachers who were involved and who were not involved in research activities do not differ among themselves. The teachers involved in research activities demonstrate lower possibility that they will simply give a lecture on the course material. Key words: ISHEL research, linear regression, logistic regression, quasi-experimental design, the propensity score matching method, the research activities of teachers, higher education, degree in engineering.
