This study is dedicated to researching of formation process of Russian universities organizational identity. These universities are taking part in the state enhancing competitiveness program (Project 5-100). The empirical study base consists of set of interviews with Project 5-100 executives in universities, materials obtained during participant observation of “Global Universities” Association work meeting, strategic documents of Project 5-100 participating universities.

Based on the new institutional approach and using the coding technique and categorization of grounded theory and identity claim analysis, the study shows that Russian Universities organizational identity is formed by global competitive university myth (world-class university): university self-determination takes place in the categories that are highlighting the features of a world-class university. These categories are opposed to categories where universities perceive themselves in the past (teaching machine vs research university; “closed” university vs “open” university (international, social); industry university vs entrepreneurial university). Also the study shows that university organizational identity is supported by peculiar practices that contravene to the effectiveness logic.
