Student: Solovev Vladislav

Educational Programme: History (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2017

This work is performed in the genre of personal history, where the research of biographies of Polish-Lithuanian representatives allows to appeal to the surrounding society during the Time of Troubles. The research makes an attempt to make a certain collective portrait of the members of szlachta, and as a research question appeals to their motivation. A certain number of personal documents are used as sources. These include such documents as the diary of Jan Peter Sapieha, the notes of Hetman Zholkevsky on the Moscow war, the diary of Jozef Budila, the history of the Moscow war of Nikolai Markhotsky and the diary of Samuel Maskevich. The results of the research show that the members of szlachta could be both independent participants who voluntarily decided to participate in the events of the Time of Troubles and participants of the intervention by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In addition, an analysis of the motivation and behavior of the members of szlachta indicates that material benefit was paramount for them.
