Japan started to disburse official development assistance (ODA) to neighbouring countries for solving its own economic and political issues. It evolved into a key instrument of international affairs and economic policy. Japanese model of international assistance and its effectiveness is a debatable subject among scholars. Current research aimes to analyze the impact of Japanese ODA on the economies of recipient countries and to provide a deeper understanding of Japan's economic role in Southeast Asia.
