Ethnic Diversity of Countries: General Regularities or Specific Examples?
2017
Different ethnicities of people in society can cause the social tension and lead to economic instability in the country. In this paper, I study the features of the distribution of regions by the diversity of ethnic groups.

To evaluate ethnic diversity in Sri Lanka, China and the USA, I calculate the classical indices of diversity and introduce a new index. The introduced measure of diversity is simpler than the known analogs, but it has all the characteristics which necessary to describe the diversity in society.

It is justified that the distribution of regions is not sensitive to the choice of a specific measure of diversity. It is shown that the geographical location affects the distribution of regions by the diversity of ethnic groups. To explain the probabilistic regularities which were found, a probabilistic model is introduced. This model simulates the settlement of a given number of people by the districts.

The model is based on the assumption that the individual prefers to live with the people of his ethnos. Due to computer modelling it has established that in the model there is a limiting distribution of regions to which the model distribution approaches with increasing number of people being resettled. The limiting distribution agrees with observations, at least for regions where one of the population groups dominates others. Thus, the conclusion is that the distribution of people in these regions is described by the probabilistic model of settlement.
