Digital Navigation in the City: Practices of Using Online Map Applications
Complex Social Analysis
(Master’s programme)
2017
The work is devoted to digital and traditional navigation practices in the city. Along with the development and transformation of cities, the logic of navigation changes in them: from the most ancient to pre-cartographic, connected with the orientation of the celestial bodies, with the help of natural phenomena, to digital ones, connected with the use of cartographic online applications.

Work was done using the video method-the use of an action camera to fix city practices. Informants were offered a city quest, for which they had to demonstrate navigational practices, skills and competencies.

Digital navigation augmentes more traditional navigation practices, together with the use of smartphones and navigation applications, a collective strategy and navigation with street maps are used. A classification of the practices of using cartographic online applications is suggested, gender differences in navigation are noted depending on the self-assessment of navigational abilities.
