The Potential of Reducing the Cost of Medical Care Standards based on Assessment of Health Care Volumes

Using restricted resources effectively is the main goal for health care systems of all countries. In thisstudy have analyzed the main causes, which impacted on the ineffective use of resources in health care, and methods which increase the effectiveness of the health care system. The goal of this research was to assess the contents of medical care standards in terms of scientific validity, including medical services and drugs, their effectiveness, safety and compliance with the clinical situation described in the standard. In this study an analysis of the list of the medical services and drugs was performed, using the guidelines, and there was an appraisal of the potential of cost reduction as a consequence of the exclusion of wrongly specified medical services and drugs.

As a result, after the analysis, the calculation of the cost volume of medical services and drugs specified in the standards of health care showed a decrease of 66% (on average) in the cost of the standards of primary health care, as well as a reduction in standards of specialized medical care on average by 19%.
