The issue of assessing competition is still not exhausted, because this field of knowledge currently is not systematized and complete. The central theory is the theory of multilevel competition, that has no analogues in the world economic literature and is at the stage of formation now. The basic postulates of the theory of multilevel competition stood out this direction among other t theories on competition in market structures. The purpose of the dissertation research is the study of theories, methods and approaches that exist in the modern theory of competition in terms of their use in the formation of a multi-level competition theory. The object of the study was the pharmaceutical market in Russia and St. Petersburg. The subject of the study is to assess the level of competition in market as a multi-level system. In order to make a more accurate assessment of the competitive market environment, it is proposed to conditionally divide market into hierarchical levels, after that to characterize competition of such levels separately using generally accepted indicators and new coefficients, that characterizes the distribution of market shares. The result of the dissertation research is the evaluation of the competitive environment of the Russian pharmaceutical market based on the concept of a multilevel market structure. Also as a result is the approbation of a new indicator of the distribution of market shares of competitors, proposed by the economist S.G.Svetunkov.
