The purpose of this study is to identify techniques that are used to promote the media in social networks and through which the target audience is formed and expanded. The hypothesis is that social media is an effective tool for the formation and expansion of the target audience of Russian media when the features of the type of publication and its potential audience are taken into account, which in turn correspond with the capabilities of a particular social network.
