Despite the vast amount of research on ancient Chinese texts conducted by East and West scholars, little is known about the work “Guanzi”. The overall image that emerges from the literature is that the book is officially attributed to the scholar of Chunqiu period Guan Zhong. This study focuses on the problem of defining the origin and author of “Guanzi” by means of the lexical analysis of selected chapters. Classification of smaller constituent fragments within the chapters complicates and even challenges widely held assumptions about dating of the whole text. In general, it adds nuance to common understanding of this work as an entirely philosophical treatise. This paper is part of a growing body of scholarship on the authenticity and attribution of ancient Chinese texts to different schools of philosophical thought. Keywords: ancient Chinese texts, Guan Zhong, philosophical treatise, legalism, Chunqiu period.
