Asian Studies
(Bachelor’s programme)

2017
In this paper, we will consider in detail the history of the Iwakura mission (1871-1873), one of the first large-scale Japanese diplomatic missions. The main purpose of the Iwakura mission was to achieve a revision of the unequal treaties of Japan with the Western countries. However, this goal was not the only one - Japanese delegates also planned to raise Japan's prestige in the international arena and conduct a large-scale study of developed Western societies. In this paper we attempt to analyze how the Iwakura mission was implemented and identify its main results.
