This paper is devoted to the idea of ​​the John J. Newman University. To better understand the aims and principles of the university's concept, the author , firstly, refers to the consideration of the British university tradition in the context of a common European heritage. The next step is to inquire the idea of ​​the university. The university is defined as a knowledge system. The main principle of the university is to provide liberal education, whose goal is to cultivate the intellect. The final part of the study examines the role of theology in the university.
