At this research an empirical analysis of the effectiveness of the selection of aircraft types by Russian airlines is made from the point of view of minimizing the cost of transportation. The sample consists of 20 largest air routes and 8,444 routes, committed in high and low season. For estimation, a model is constructed that determines the optimal type of aircraft for the chosen route network in terms of minimizing the total cost price. The analysis found that with the optimal distribution of aircraft along the routes, the total number of flights is less than the actual number by 11% and by 21%, assuming the indifference of passengers to the choice of airports in Moscow.
