Empty Spaces in Urban Environment: a Study of Their Value and Meaning for Population of Big Cities (Example of New-York)

The main aim of the current research is to reveal types and characteristics of unused urban public spaces. Unused public spaces are public spaces, which are available for ordinary citizens, but for some reason they are not used and become empty. The research is provided by analysis of Twitter data, gathered by the case of New York City. By the analysis types of activities, taking part on particular urban public spaces, were revealed too. Comparison of New York City districts defined the patterns of public spaces’ using in each district, which were describes by the theory of place attachment. Key words: empty urban public spaces, New York City, Twitter, place attachment.
