Political Factors of Military Draft Reform: Why Nations Move to Professional Armies (1945-2010)

The work answers the following research question - what political factors contribute to the reform of the national armed forces from mandatory to contract way of recruiting solders. The subject of the study are reforms of recruiting soldiers in 30 countries. Using the theoretical positions of S. Huntington, historical neoinstitutionalism approach and author’s previous works, this research not just answers the research question, but also gives implications for further analysis. The results of the work show the influence of presidential powers and international military conflicts on the possibilities of reform implementation.
