In this paper, an analysis of intellectual property theories in their relationship to the institution of copyright is made. Modern realities, especially development of information technology, force researchers to reconsider classical views on the nature of intellectual property in general and copyright in particular. In this connection, the main directions of the doctrine of intellectual property are explored: utilitarian theory, labor theory, personal theory and theory of social planning. Doctrinal provisions have a significant impact on the development of positive law. In this paper, the direct relationship between the dominant theory and the concept of copyright of individual countries is reflected. Operating with arguments of this or that theory, it is possible to suggest ways of further development of copyright. The paper presents several proposals for improving copyright and analyzes their practical applicability.
