Functional Requirements for Company’s XXX IS

This work is dedicated to the topic of functional requirements development and management. This topic is of high relevance because to make a valuable product IT organizations should know how to develop, create and manage functional requirements. Despite the rich experience in information technologies, many companies struggle to understand, document, and manage customer requirements. Irresponsible requirements documenting, frequent requirements changing, and business processes misunderstanding are the main reasons why the majority of information systems seem to be unsuccessful. In this study standards BABOK, PMBOK, REBOK, SWEBOK and RUP are compared in order to find the most suitable methodology for a certain company. The general purpose of the study is to develop functional requirements for the information system. Particularly, the specific task of the study includes the following: to analyze different standards and methods to develop and manage requirements; to choose the most suitable standard for the certain project; to describe and model business processes; to develop functional requirement for IS applying the chosen standard. The first part of this work consists of literature review which covers several standards and approaches, describes main terms of the field. Then all methods are compared by developed criteria, in order to decide on which ones will be taken as the basis for requirements development. To make a comparison analytic hierarchy process is applied. The second part covers details and business requirements for the IS development project. Business processes of organization are visualized with the help of EPC notation. Various documents are developed, including user stories, use cases, class diagram, prototypes etc. As a result functional requirements are documented and developed according to the chosen standard. The main result of this project is complete functional requirement description for the brand-new information system.
