All leading countries are actively preparing for the sixth technological way, which is confirmed by strategic government documents of such rapidly growing economies like Germany, China, Republic of Korea, India, Brazil. It is worth saying that the machine-tool industry is of a high priority in the list. The main reason of this lies in the fact that investment goods are the base of the whole economy. A modern high-tech equipment is an indicator of the technology level throughout the industry. Given the current conditions of the new technological reality, the role of the state in the development of priority sectors is constantly increasing. The government industry targets define the role and place of countries in the emerging technological reality.

The machinery and equipment belong to the medium- and high-tech products with the high value-added. This become possible providing the developed research, innovation and technical base.

The convergence of the iron part and software components, the digitalization of production will significantly change the nature of the industry.

In the paper the development of the machine tool industry is considered from the point of the theory of technological ways and regimes. It was made the evaluation of the position of machine tool industry in the world, in a group of selected countries – Brazil, India, China, the Republic of Korea, Russia. Such evaluation revealed some common trends and problems. The obtained materials on innovative-technological development of the countries allowed to specify the future trajectory of technological movement of the industry.

It was also done the analysis of the status and development of the modern Russian machine-tool industry. In the paper was recommended the road map for the development of machine-tool industry in Russia till 2025. The results of the research could serve as a basis for the further study of the machinery support in specific sectors.
