The Impact of Transformation of Residential Areas on Living Environment

Graduation project focused on identifying factors of promoting quality of residential environment during the transformation of residential areas built up in second half of the twentieth century. In this paper residential environment is understood as the relationship between person and surrounded environment, characterized by a sense of ownership, security, need for personification and adaptation for user’s tastes and values. This paper considers balance of public and private interests as a criterion for attaining quality of the residential environment by transformation of residential areas. Analyzing existing practices of redevelopment of residential areas in France, Germany, Hong Kong and Russia from this point of view, author identifies factors of accomplishment the quality of residential environment by transformation of residential areas. Quality of residential environment is achieved by high level of civic participation, availability of legal tools to harmonize public and private interests.
