Maternal Attitude of Women Incarcerated in Penal Institutions to Their Children - the Experience of Using Biographical Interview

The present study analyzes the problem of maternal attitude of women incarcerated in penal institutions and discusses the factors influencing on the maternal attitude of incarcerated women to their children. The primary focus is on the revealing of the role of incarceration conditions and regulations of a penal institution in the process of formation of maternal attitude to a child, and on the description of the types of maternal attitude. The investigation is done using qualitative methodology and is based on the analysis of biographical interviews of women incarcerated in penal institutions. As the result of the research, four types of maternal attitude to a child are described, biographical effects and the factors of incarceration conditions influencing on the formation of this phenomenon are determined, maternal practices and incarcerated women’s strategies of planning an unborn child are described.
