Sociology
(Bachelor’s programme)
2017
The present study is aimed at identifying the reasons why women choose engineering career and

analyzing their study and work experience in men`s profession. The aim is realized through applying qualitative method of semi-structured interviews with female students and graduates of engineering specialties. Qualitative data analysis was made with the help of thematic coding. Also analysis of statistics was applied in the study to analyze the structure and dynamics of students` number in different specialties and of the engineering occupations` gender profile. As for the results, some of the reasons why women choose engineering career are of a general nature and some are related to gender division. The same is related to study and work experience that can be both positive and negative. The work of the engineer seems to be prestigious, however its status in comparison with Soviet times depreciates. The job of an engineer is boring and routine and engineers are perceived as unsociable people.
