The paper presents a new concept of leadership in sports, based on a psychoanalytic understanding of the professional development of an athlete. The emergence of a mature leader in external reality is impossible without the acquisition of a mature leader's inner self and his constant development. The psychoanalytic dynamics of internal leadership is described in detail and it is shown that inevitable internal conflicts are not only constraints and obstacles for professional growth, but, on the contrary, are necessary conditions for the emergence and development of a mature leadership self
