What Do Young Adults Think about Their Future Family? The Meaning of Life Experience in the Parental Family
Sociology
(Bachelor’s programme)
2017
The family loses many of its functions in modern society, transferring them to other social institutions. The main agents of the socialization of children are the media, schools and youth subcultures. On the other hand, statistics in Russia and other countries confirm that such important characteristics as the intended (and subsequently real) family size and gender attitude depend on the size of the parental family and the mother's employment of a person.

The aim of the study is to identify how the experience of life in the parental family is interpreted and how important it is to construct the attitudes toward one's own family (the intended size of the family and the gender attitude).

Based on 17 focused biographical interviews with young adults who do not have their own family, the main categories assessing the experience of life in the parental family to which they draw attention were identified: communication, independence (and control), and livelihood. Based on the analysis of each of these categories, hypotheses about the reasons for the construction of attitudes toward own family during residence in the parental family were put forward.
