In this paper, we summarize the results of studying the effect of depositing an osmium film on the working surface of a metal-porous cathode on its emissivity. The main attention was directed to the study of the microstructure of a standard metal-porous cathode and a cathode coated with an osmium film. The aim of the work is to improve the technology of depositing an osmium film on the surface of a metal cathode and to study the effect of this film on its emission properties. In the course of the work, the structure of the osmium film has been investigated, as well as the mechanism of its growth on a metal-porous cathode. To determine the emission parameters, an experimental diode has been made. Emission parameters were estimated for standard cathodes and cathodes coated with an osmium film using the method of the underheating characteristics. It has been found that cathodes with an osmium film with a thickness of 0.4-0.6 μm have a longer durability and a more uniform distribution of the emission flux over the surface as compared to a standard metal-porous cathode.

Student Theses at HSE must be completed in accordance with the University Rules and regulations specified by each educational programme.

Summaries of all theses must be published and made freely available on the HSE website.

The full text of a thesis can be published in open access on the HSE website only if the authoring student (copyright holder) agrees, or, if the thesis was written by a team of students, if all the co-authors (copyright holders) agree. After a thesis is published on the HSE website, it obtains the status of an online publication.

Student theses are objects of copyright and their use is subject to limitations in accordance with the Russian Federation’s law on intellectual property.

In the event that a thesis is quoted or otherwise used, reference to the author’s name and the source of quotation is required.
