Consumer Practices of Russian Families in the Market of Additional Education for Schoolchildren: Types and Determinants

This project is intended to cover the major issues of additional (supplementary) education. Though the topic ranks among traditional studies – there are numerous theoretical and empirical works on the study in question – it seems to be always of interest. The study assesses the degree of influence of factors (different components of family capital, individual characteristics of the child, as well as the type of inhabited locality and school type) on the choice of certain consumer practices in the market of additional education. The empirical basis of the study is a part of Monitoring of education markets and organizations - the survey of Parents of children, attending additional educational activities in 2013. The typology of consumer practices was obtained by cluster analysis. Based on respondents' answers on the profile of additional classes, as well as the forms of training and types of organizations in which the child receives additional education, five types of consumer practices were received: "Investments in a successful future", "For the benefit of society", "We want to know and be able to do everything" , "Child of Art", "Sport - is all for us".

Evaluation of the influence of various factors on the degree of involvement, as well as on the choice of the type of consumer practices, was carried out using the evaluation of regression models. The results of the research confirmed that the factors of family capital, as well as the type of settlement and the type of school, are significant determinants of both the degree of involvement of the child in additional education and the choice of the content component of practices in this market. Moreover, the significant determinants of type are Identified values of parents: the "Knowledge" installation, the "Self-realization" installation, the "Parenting" installation, the "Socialization" installation.
