Educational Programme: Sociology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2017

To date, pastafarianism is quite a popular phenomenon, spreading all over the world. Religious movement arose in 2005 thanks to the physicist Bobby Henderson as a response to the introduction in schools of the subject of the theory of intelligent design. The phenomenon was widely publicized: "pseudo-religion" was mentioned in several books, one of which was written by Charles Dawkins with the title "God as an illusion"; The topic of pastafarianism intrigued scientists and American religious scholars and was discussed at conferences organized by the American Academy of Religion, one of which was in 2007. All these and many other events provoked new waves of popularity. The purpose of our study was to identify the subjective meanings that the concerned pastafarianians put into pastafarianism. Subjective meanings were considered at the angle of the following spheres of sociology: the sociology of religion and the emphasis on new religious movements, as well as on ideology in a general sense; Sociology of the Internet, within the framework of which we considered the features of user interaction in the context of pastafarianism; As well as the sociology of the conflict, from which we chose the theory of L. Kozer and R. Darendorf to analyze pastafarianism from the standpoint of the theory of conflicts.
