The Project 'Algol 68': Soviet Technologies and International Scientific Cooperation in 1970s-1980s

This work is dedicated to the history of programming language Алгол 68 in the Soviet Union in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev and Novosibirsk (Akademgorodok) in the 1970s – 1980s. In addition, this research is analyzed the international scientific cooperation of Soviet scientists in the Working group 2.1 (WG 2.1) in International Federation for Information Processing. The WG 2.1 created programming language Algol 68, what was the basis for Алгол 68 on Russian in the USSR. The creating and developing programming languages Algol 68 and Алгол 68 have not been researched in the Russian and foreign historiography, as these programming languages did not employed in neither the Academia nor industry. However, it is allowed to identify the causes that made this programming language demand due to researching the sources. Overall, the aim of research is analyzed the history of development of cybernetic and programming in the USSR in the 1970s – 1980s. Due to published and unpublished sources, this work is analyzed questions such as influence of the Soviet ideology on the Soviet computer industry and its development; international scientific cooperation of the Soviet scientists with foreign colleagues from capitalistic countries; Aлгол 68 was innovation or not. Overall, there are some conclusions of this work: the Soviet ideology influenced on the Soviet cybernetic and programming; but Soviet scientists were created modern language by the influence of foreign colleagues; Алгол 68 was not innovation in the USSR.
