International Aspects of South Korea`s “Developmental State”: the East Asian Perspective
International Relations
(Bachelor’s programme)
10
2017
The following paper examines international political peculiarities of South Korean modernization strategy and its export to countries and economies of East Asia.

The research is conducted within the framework of the theory of complex interdependence applied as an analytical tool. In the context of intensified processes of international integration and diluted responsibilities of a government, newly industrialized economies implemented a modernization strategy which contributed to their social and economic progress and shaped political institutions that supported that breakthrough. In that context the illustrative example of the Republic of Korea should be mentioned. Studying thoroughly this case will permit to transfer the South Korean experience of modernization strategy, which is based on the concept of "developmental state", to the realities of the neighbor countries and regions.

Within the framework of the theory of complex interdependence, the analysis of the possibilities and objective restrictions, which might arise from examining the range of closely tied and interconnected aspects of successful South Korean modernization, was conducted. At the same time, a parallel was drawn to the further implications of South Korean "developmental state" to the priorities and prospects of the Russian Federation.
